While the authoritarian management style is often seen in the workplace, it can actually have a negative impact on your company if you are forced to use it excessively.

Authoritative leaders are characterized by a rigid and unyielding demeanor, as they tend to micromanage their employees. They’re looking for unquestionable obedience and self-sacrifice, not open dialogue and hard work.

Be wary of this style when it comes to negotiating pay or holding your team accountable. Also, avoid authoritarian leaders if you’re looking for mutual trust between the staff.


The status-oriented style can be a good choice for some managers, especially if you want to run a tight ship. If you’re looking to get more out of your staff, expect a lower degree of flexibility.

Affiliative style

Managers who possess an affinity style are typically comfortable with change and other new employees. They are often willing to take on additional work and are passionate about what they do.
