Christmas is a time of giving and joy. If you’re looking for ways to spread some Christmas cheer, there are plenty of ways to do it. It’s easy for Christmas spirit to come and go throughout the year. As you may know, it’s not always easy to maintain that sense of holiday spirit when things get busy or life takes its toll on us. That’s why this week (and every day) should be one where we remember the true meaning of Christmas. Here are some ideas to help you keep the spirit alive all year long.

Be Generous

The basic laws of society are summed up in one core principle: You’re supposed to give more to those in need than you take from them. It’s like the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. You wouldn’t be a caring person if you didn’t treat others the way they would want to be treated. Some of us are fortunate enough to be able to put away extra money for the upcoming holiday season. A couple of weeks before Christmas, you can put some of that money away for yourself so you can enjoy the holiday season without financial worries.

The same principle applies for giving. One thing you can do to keep your Christmas spirit going all year long is to donate as much money as possible to the needy and less fortunate members of your community.

Give Something You Really Want to Someone Else

Most people will tell you that giving to others is a great way to keep the spirit of Christmas alive. What if, for example, you could donate to someone else in need? After all, that’s the purpose behind the season.

If you’d like to help someone else this holiday season, there are plenty of options. This list compiled by HelpGuide.org includes charities that are collecting toys and other gifts for children, food pantries, local humane societies and other causes that help those in need. When you give, it feels great.

Spread Christmas Cheer with Puppies

If you’re a dog lover, you can help spread some holiday cheer this season with a visit to a local animal shelter to visit some pups in need. Many shelters will accept donations on behalf of their animals.

Donate Your Stuff or Time

Let’s face it – everyone has things they no longer need. Take advantage of the opportunity to help someone else out by finding a good cause and donating items or your time. You can donate items you no longer use to a local charity such as Toys for Tots or help at a local food pantry. Or you can find a local shelter or food pantry and volunteer to help. Or perhaps you can spend a day or a week cooking meals or baking cookies for your local food pantry or shelter. If it’s something you can commit to, you’ll be a winner in the spirit department.

When you give to someone, there is a special feeling that comes with it. This joy can help you connect with your loved ones during the holiday season.

In addition, you can also give to charities that benefit people in need. There are so many people who don’t have many opportunities to enjoy the holiday season. Giving to people who need it and who are less fortunate can help you feel great inside and out.

According to Psychology Today, Christmas is one of the most stressful times of the year. Despite our own good intentions, we don’t always manage to keep our stress in check. Whether it’s working for months on end, getting through family get-togethers with our families, or all the other craziness of the season, stress can really take a toll on us.

If you’ve been feeling down or overwhelmed during this time of year, here are a few things to consider to keep your mental health in check.

Focus on what you can control. There’s nothing wrong with taking some time to breathe, meditate, and do some healthy self-care. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus on what you can change. You may even consider hiring a personal trainer or a life coach to help you manage the stress of the season.

Choose a Holiday Charity to Support

Maybe you have some extra time on your hands, and you feel the spirit of giving after some weeks of dieting. You may not have a lot of extra money to give, but you can still choose a charity. One of my favorite pastimes is seeing people out on the town having a good time. That’s what makes seeing so many people out in the city all the time interesting and fun. However, it does also make me wonder if we ever get a date. Instead of wondering what your date is doing, you can actually offer to take them on a date.

Spread holiday cheer with a kind gesture

The holiday spirit is about spreading kindness and generosity to all. When you do a good deed for someone, do something nice for another, or share your time with others, it will have an impact. And remember, you can make a difference right now. This season, make it a point to volunteer. Whether it’s at a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, a school, a senior’s home, or another community-based organization, you will make a difference. The effort you put in can be life-changing.

Be thankful.

There are people in your life who may not be as fortunate as you. Be sure to take the time to be thankful for what you have. Try giving a small token of your appreciation to those who deserve it. You may be surprised to find that they will appreciate the gesture.

Surprise someone with a spontaneous act of kindness

Last week, my friend Lindsey posted a video on her Facebook page. She left her phone at a coffee shop and had a stranger return it to her. Lindsey told her that she was able to take a nap during the morning and during that time a stranger had found her phone and returned it to her. This video had captured Lindsey’s entire day and changed her entire mood. I was touched by her comment that she didn’t think about the situation for more than 30 seconds after it happened.

If you feel like an act of kindness doesn’t seem like enough to keep the spirit alive, maybe you need to remember the moments that people do those small acts of kindness. Not only do they save you a little money, but they also make people’s day.
